I just got done reading Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. Mad props to Alli for reading it in Peru and getting me interested and my Aunt Beth for hooking me up with a copy.
It's the fairly amazing, and true, tale of a mountain climber turned humanitarian. After Greg Mortenson failed to climb K2 (arguably the hardest mountain in the world to summit) he stumbled into a remote Pakistani village and his life began a new course. Struck by the villagers kindness, hospitality, and poverty he promised to build them a school. He has spent the last decade and a half or so building schools in remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Not to mention the vocational centers, refugee relief, and clean water projects that the organization he helped found, The Central Asia Institute, have also created in the region.
It's definitely worth a read. Not sure that my parents would appreciate that it's made me seriously consider what I might do if the job in Afghanistan actually materializes...
