I'm not a huge birthday person, in the sense that I don't need or want people to do a lot for me on my birthday. But I am a huge fan of birthdays, in the sense that I walk around all day feeling happy and loved. Reasons why yesterday rocked:
I got to play racquetball.
Mom called me and a bunch of middle aged women sang happy birthday to me.
My dad, sister, aunt, and a bunch of friends also called me.
Race Relations Project was excellent. We had cookies. And Laurie was back. And we split in half, having a people of color caucus, and a white person caucus (also known as the caucasian caucus). And the white people discussion was absolutely excellent. Really good, deep, intense thoughts and questions.
On top of that, Sarah, one of my most excellent co-workers, got me a birthday present! A couple weeks ago I found keys in the building we work in, and Sarah took them and put her number on the blackboard. Some elderly gentleman called her, and was so thankful he gave her a card with a barnes & noble gift certificate. Sarah being the thoughtful and not selfish person she is, spent the gift certificate buying me Flying at Night, a book of poems by Ted Kooser. (She may have also got herself coffee, which made me feel better about not taking all of her reward). One more thing to add to my reading list, but I started, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. And really, how often do I read poems? Not often enough.
I got about 80 bagillian facebook messages wishing me happy birthday.
All of ACF sang to me (ok, maybe that one wasn't so good).
Anna Jepson brought me a west cookie. Seriously.
I totally forgot to bring snack for my small group, as Judy Firebaugh is out of town... but my small group did the chicken dance to earn lollipops from Aaron's group. And then another group gave us brownies anyways.
I got to go to Chili's and eat dessert with some excellent people.
And thus, it was an amazing day.
Oh, PS
Happy Singles-Awareness Day!
