As previously mentioned, I've been reading Jesus for President by Shane Claiborne and Chris Haw. It's been forcing me to seriously consider some thoughts that have just been sitting on the back burner for too long.
I'm not sure I can handle much more patriotism within the church. Putting the red, white & blue next to the cross. Pledging allegiance to something other than Christ. Jesus came and claimed to be the Messiah and the Son of God bringing the Gospel. Those terms have been churchified, but originally were terms used for Caesar and Rome. Essentially Jesus said he was the President and the Commander in Chief of a new country/kingdom. Our citizenship is from there (Philippians 3:20).
I don't serve my country, I serve Jesus. Why would Jesus love our country more than others or our people more than the people of Iraq or Afghanistan or Iran or North Korea? Why do we send our young men and women to die for their country?
Idolatry is what we would sacrifice our children for.
